Long-term revenues
Private duty's potential
The average private duty in-home care client uses just over 20 hours of services per week with an average hourly charge of nearly $18.00. Just 25 private duty clients, at the assumed national average, equate to more than $450,000 in annualized gross revenues.
$44 billion in spending for non-Medicare home care services is up for grabs in 2007 and private payment for in-home care services is on course to surpass Medicare spending by 2010.
More pay options
Private duty opens a broad range of pay sources. Private pay, Veterans Administration, Long-Term Care Insurance and Medicaid Waiver Programs are a sampling of the pay sources that private duty affords.
Simple admissions and referrals
Private duty clients are not governed by complex Medicare compliance. In turn, new private duty clients do not require lengthy intake and admissions processes. Doctor's orders are not required to admit and serve private duty clients.
Legislation and trending
Over the past several years, a majority of states have applied for waiver programs aimed at giving seniors the option of in-home care instead of nursing home care. More and more states are lining up to funnel more dollars into private duty in-home care and away from nursing home placement.
There are no licensure requirements for private duty services in more than half of the states. Private duty is not highly regulated, documentation intensive or heavily scrutinized, creating few barriers to entry.
A growing need
For every 100-bed nursing home research shows that, on average, 50-60 residents each year will find themselves needing assistance in their own home with most (90%+) needing assistance with non-medical, private duty, ADLs.
The CDC revealed that of the 7,179,000 annual home health agency discharges, more than 70% remained in the community. Of these 5,100,000 people, most are discharged with private duty needs.
