Products & Services
In 1988, Jack Berry and Harry Shallop had a terrific idea. Veterans of the retail and wholesale grocery trade, Jack and Harry decided to bring supermarket-style convenience and value to the pet food and supply industry. Jack and Harry’s new store had all of the nice things that made supermarkets so popular with shoppers. It featured wide aisles with neat well-stocked display shelves, helpful overhead signs, ample parking, convenient hours, a friendly staff and great everyday low prices.
Customer’s loved Jack and Harry’s novel retailing concept. Within five years of opening their first Pet Supplies "Plus" store in Redford, Michigan, they had 30 locations. Soon, they were joined by a third partner, Harvey Solway, and the business continued to grow. Today, there are over 215 Pet Supplies "Plus" stores in 21 states.
Pet Supplies "Plus" stores are located in convenient high-traffic sites with lots of easy parking. Our goal is to make our stores as comfortable and accessible as possible for our customers and their pets. That’s one reason why we limit the size of our stores to 5,000 to 6,000 square feet in smaller markets and 7,000 to 9,000 square feet in larger metropolitan areas.
We believe that pets and their owners prefer to shop at smaller stores rather than "big box" locations. Limiting square footage offers another advantage: It allows us to hold down operating costs so we can offer you everyday low prices. At the same time, we’re able to stock an unbeatable selection of food and suppliers at our stores, thanks to our efficient distribution.

Training & Support
Pet Supplies 'Plus" stands behind its franchisees with a comprehensive support services program. From the beginning of your relationship with Pet Supplies "Plus", and throughout your association with us, we will work closely with you to develop your PSP store.
- Site Selection - Potential sites are reviewed carefully by our corporate staff to ensure that Pet Supplies "Plus" franchised stores are opened in locations that not only have a high volume of traffic, but the right kind of traffic. We also evaluate the ingress and egress of a site, traffic flow (is the site on the consumer's right on the way home from work), and other critical factors that influence the ultimate success of a store.
- Store Design and Layout - Drawing on years of experience creating successful supermarket-style pet stores, our corporate staff lays out store interiors for each franchised location. Our staff will supervise the original set-up of each store.
- Training - Every franchisee receives hands-on management training at our headquarters and at one of our corporate stores.
- Continued Involvement- Our district managers regularly visit stores to answer questions, share insights and offer suggestions on ways to improve sales and profits.
- Annual Meetings - Our Fall Sales Show provides an opportunity to meet with corporate staff and other franchisees in a relaxed informal setting to exchange ideas, and to purchase show specials from leading manufacturers in the pet industry. These annual events are also a good chance to meet with manufacturers and their representatives to learn about the latest products and trends and to network with other Franchisees.
- Buying Power - Franchisees have the opportunity to benefit from our substantial buying power and experience. Pet Supplies "Plus" has developed solid relationships with the leading suppliers in the pet industry. We assist franchisees in selecting initial inventory and locating approved vendors.
- Product Selection - Pet Supplies "Plus" stores carry a competitively-priced selection of name brand merchandise from the pet industry's leading manufacturers.
- Advertising - We provide ongoing advertising support, including ad layouts, and the opportunity to participate in our printing program for circulars.
- Publicity - Pet Supplies "Plus” contacts the local media to inform them about the grand opening of all stores. Franchisees can contact us to have press releases sent to the media about special in-store events. Local media contact lists are made available to franchisees by our public relations department.
Why Pet Supplies?
Pet Supplies "Plus" seeks to locate its stores on high-traffic streets, in high-visibility buildings. Our goal is to make our stores as convenient as possible for our customers and their pets. We believe that pet owners prefer to shop at smaller stores rather than "big box" locations. Limiting square footage offers another advantage: It allows us to hold down operating costs. At the same time, we are able to offer a product selection at our stores that is as large, or larger, than any in our industry, thanks to our efficient distribution system. All of our stores receive weekly deliveries, ensuring that a large and varied selection of merchandise is always in stock, without the need for excessive backup inventory.
